Why I became an acupuncturist

I had my first acupuncture treatment in 1994, to address a shoulder problem. I tried various conventional treatments, which had no effect, then someone suggested acupuncture. During my first treatment, I found the experience profound. The acupuncturist used only a few fine needles at varaious locations on my body (none near my shoulder) and I became aware of a powerful force releasing from deep within me. For some years, I’d felt my energy was low and I’d assumed it was part of getting old (I was then only in my early thirties). But on the day after my first acupuncture treatment, I felt I had the energy of a nineteen year old again, which has remained with me since. I also felt like a different person; I felt I’d been brought back to life in some indefinable way.

I completed the course of treatments, and my life was transformed. Not only was my health transformed, but I also found that beneficial coincidences started happening. Whatever I needed in life, just seemed to present itself, be it related to work, accommodation, or social situations. I’ve since noticed this same process happening with my own patients. It may be that acupuncture puts us more in touch with whatever energy flows between all people, which is perhaps what then enables our needs to be matched to the appropriate resources (that is, enables “synchronicity” to work for us).

After moving to Bristol in 1996, the time finally seemed right for me to start training in acupuncture. I didn’t hesitate; I took the opportunity, and at every moment since starting my own practice, it seems that I’m now doing what I was intended to.
